🧠 The Architecture Confusion
Every year, thousands of PCM students appear for JEE Paper 2 (B.Arch) and NATA. Yet, after the results are declared, mass confusion erupts. If you are a PCM student planning to pursue B.Arch in 2026, this guide is written specifically for you.
Most students are confused about:
- Where to apply after results are out?
- How the JoSAA counselling system actually works?
- Which colleges accept NATA vs JEE Paper 2?
- How state counselling portals differ from central admissions?
👉 Because of this confusion, many students miss deadlines, choose the wrong counselling portal, or lose excellent colleges despite having a decent score. This guide will clarify everything.
📘 Secure Your Safety Net
Architecture seats are severely limited in top colleges. Before you rely solely on one exam, you must have a backup strategy. Download our free blueprint to understand your safety-net options if the ranks don't fall in your favor.

Yes. PCM is absolutely mandatory.
Before thinking about JEE Paper 2 or NATA counselling, you must clearly understand the B.Arch eligibility criteria in India. Architecture admission is legally regulated by the Council of Architecture (CoA). All recognised B.Arch colleges must follow their rules.
To pursue B.Arch in India (2026 admission cycle), you MUST have:
- Studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in Class 11 and 12.
- Secured a minimum 50% aggregate marks in 10+2.
- Secured a minimum 50% specifically in Mathematics.
- OR Passed a 10+3 Diploma Examination with Mathematics as compulsory subject (minimum 50% aggregate).
If you are not from a PCM background, you are not legally eligible for B.Arch admission in CoA-approved colleges, regardless of your interest level.
🏛️ 2. JEE Paper 2 (B.Arch) Complete Overview
Many PCM students confuse JEE Paper 1 (Engineering) with JEE Paper 2 (Architecture). They are completely different exams testing different skills.
What is JEE Paper 2?
Conducted by the NTA, it is your gateway to Central Government institutes. It is conducted twice a year (Session 1 & Session 2), and your best score is used to generate your Final All India Rank (AIR).
Where Does It Lead?
Clearing JEE Paper 2 makes you eligible for admission exclusively into NITs (National Institutes of Technology), SPAs (Schools of Planning & Architecture), and select centrally funded technical institutes.
Important: What About IITs for Architecture?
IITs do NOT admit B.Arch students through JEE Paper 2.
Architecture admission in IITs (specifically IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee) happens through a completely separate pathway: You must clear JEE Advanced first, and then qualify the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test).
The JEE Paper 2 Exam Structure
- Part 1: Mathematics (100 Marks): 20 MCQs + 5 Numerical Value questions. High difficulty (11th/12th core JEE Science level). Negative marking applies.
- Part 2: Aptitude Test (200 Marks): 50 MCQs. Tests 3D visualization, spatial logic, architectural awareness, and mental ability. Negative marking applies.
- Part 3: Drawing Test (100 Marks): Subjective section evaluated manually. Tests perspective, 3D composition, and sketching on paper.
📐 3. NATA Complete Overview
NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is the other major entrance exam, conducted by the Council of Architecture. Unlike JEE Paper 2, NATA focuses strictly on design and architectural aptitude rather than advanced mathematics.
Where is NATA Accepted?
NATA provides a much broader safety net. The score is accepted by:
- State government architecture colleges.
- State universities and Deemed universities.
- Almost all Private B.Arch colleges in India (400+ options).
- Elite autonomous institutes like CEPT University (subject to their specific admission policy).
Crucial Note: NATA is NOT used for admission to NITs or SPAs through JoSAA.
⚙️ 4. The Real Admission Process: JoSAA vs State Counselling
This is where most students ruin their chances. Clearing an exam is only half the journey. The counselling strategy dictates your admission.
The JoSAA Route (For JEE Paper 2)
JEE Paper 2 does NOT automatically hand you an admission letter. You must actively participate in JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling.
- Get your Final AIR after Session 2.
- Register on the JoSAA portal when it opens (usually June/July).
- Fill Choices Strategically: You must arrange your preferred NITs and SPAs carefully. If you fill them randomly, you will lose a good seat.
- Participate in the multiple allotment rounds (using Freeze, Float, or Slide options).
- If seats remain vacant after JoSAA, you may enter the CSAB Special Rounds.
The State/Private Route (For NATA)
Unlike JEE, NATA admission is NOT centralized. There is no single national portal for NATA. You must apply separately to different state hubs or individual private colleges.
- ACPC (Gujarat): Crucial for CEPT University, Nirma, and top Gujarat architecture hubs.
- DTE (Maharashtra): The gateway to Sir JJ College of Architecture and top Pune institutes.
- REAP (Rajasthan): Essential for premium Rajasthan state colleges.
- KEA (Karnataka): Needed for RV College of Architecture and BMS Bangalore.
Most state counselling bodies prepare their final merit list by calculating: 50% of your NATA Score + 50% of your 12th Board PCM marks. If your board marks are low, your NATA score alone will not save you.
📅 5. The 2026 Admission Timeline (Don't Miss These)
| Period | What Happens | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | JEE Paper 2 Session 1 | Analyze score. Prepare for Session 2 if low. |
| March–July 2026 | NATA Attempts | Give early attempts to secure a backup score. |
| April 2026 | JEE Paper 2 Session 2 | Final attempt. Final AIR generated. |
| May 2026 | Board Results Declared | Keep PCM marksheets ready for state counselling merit calculations. |
| June–July 2026 | JoSAA Counselling | Register, fill choices, track allotment rounds. |
| July–August 2026 | State & NATA Counselling | Apply to multiple state portals (DTE, ACPC) simultaneously. |
✅ The Smart PCM Strategy
Architecture admission is not about ego; it is about planning. Smart PCM students prepare for both exams. Focus strongly on JEE Paper 2 for top central institutes (NITs/SPAs), but absolutely secure a NATA score to keep state universities and top private colleges open as a robust safety net.
